Make your coffee puck more evenly distributed with this handy tool. If you struggle with clumps in your coffee grounds, there’s a good chance you’re experiencing channeling. This is especially common with smaller grinders. These clumps can negatively affect your espresso extraction because channeling causes water to flow unevenly through the puck.
Fortunately, John Weiss came up with a solution in 2005 called the Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT). His idea was to gently stir the coffee grounds with a small tool—like a mini rake—to break up all the clumps. This method works perfectly when used together with a coffee funnel, preventing grounds from spilling over the edge of your portafilter.
